A JUST PEACE
THE POPE'S HOPE
END OF WAR THIS YEAR (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright.) Eec. 11 a.m. LONDON, Sept. 1. Calling on the world's leaders to reach a just peace, the Pope expressed the hope and faith that 1913 would see the end of the war and the dawn of a new peace. The Pope, who was broadcasting to the world over Vatican radio, said: ♦The war seems to be reaching its culmination. People everywhere are revolting against violence and doubting whether the continuance of such a war is justifiable. We say to those whose task it is to promote the means of peace: 'Do not destroy or darken the aspiration to peace into acts which stir up hatred and encourage resistance.! Give all nations the foundation of a worthy peace. The people everywhere want peace, bread, and work.'" According to Berlin radio, Signor Enrico Galeazzi, a personal friend of the Pope and General Governor of Vatican City, who arrived in Lisbon yesterday by air, is en route to Washington as a special envoy from the Holy See. "Vatican circles," it says, ''believe he is carrying a private message from the Pope to President Roosevelt. Signor Galeazzi is also reported to be carrying to Washington other important diplomatic documents in five big trunks which accompanied him." (The General Governor of the Vatican City is directly and exclusively responsible to the Pope, and has executive powers.) i
