DEATH OF VERITY

The "War Office announced that the Test cricketer Verity has died while a prisoner of war. He was last seen badly wounded in Sicily.
War tax collected at Wellington for the first eight months of this year shows a substantial increase over that for the same period last year, the returns being £2,854,961 and £1,807,210 respectively, according to the latest Customs figures. This is a difference of £1,047,751. For the month of August this year the revenue from this source was £353,877, as compared with £336,515 in August last year. Net Customs at £227,080 last month showed an increase, of £45,698 over .the revenue for August, 1942, and beer. duties increased by £6797 to £16,760. Sales tax, which totalled £91,105 last month, was £9592 lower than it was in August lastyear. •• ■•' ■. ■'' " ■..'.'■.- '.■■-':•
