APPRENTICESHIP LAWS
Following representations made the Minister of Labour. in regard to the rehabilitation of apprentices serving with his Majesty's Forces, a conference was held in Wellington yesterday, of representatives of organisations of employers and workers interested in apprenticeship matters, together with representatives .of Government Departments concerned. The conference was presided over by the Hon. T.O. Bishop, M.L.C.
After some discussion, the ■ conference, on the "motion of Mr. F. Campbell, president-of the New Zealand Furniture Trades Industrial Association of Employers, seconded by Mr. G. T. Thurston, general secretary of the New Zealand (except northern industrial district) Engineering and Related Trades Industrial Union of Workers, unanimously adopted the following resolution:— ■ "That it be a recommendation of this conference that, a Commission be set up by the Government to overhaul the whole of the apprenticeship laws of the Dominion, which in the opinion of the ~ conference: is a; matter. requiring urgent-attention." In the meantime the question of the revision. of the Suspension of. Apprenticeship Emerlency Regulations, 1939, which deal with, the revival of the contracts of apprenticeship of apprentices released from his Majesty's Forces, is under consideration by the Industrial Emergency Council.
