E.P.S. WATCH OFFICERS

The Mayor, Mr. Hislop, today expressed his thanks to those members of the E.P.S. who, since Japan entered the war until Friday last, voluntarily maintained a 24-hour watch in the control room. This work entailed considerable inconvenience on the part of members of the headquarters unit of the E.P.S., involving attention by day and by night to their duties, ' which they have carried out cheerfully and efficiently.

"Now that we have been able to make other arrangements to meet any situation that might arise under existing , conditions we are able 'to release them from further work," said the Mayor. "The thanks of the public are due to these men for the splendid work they have done."

When he was struck by a motor-car in Mersey Street, Island Bay, shortly before 9.30 p.m. yesterday, Mr. ;P. McGill, 176 Melbourne Road, Island Bay, bricklayer, suffered a fracture, of the right arm, abrasions to his right leg, an-d shock. The Free Ambulance took him to hospital.
