STATE FLATS

OPENING ON SATURDAY

The big block of State flats in Dixon Street, which has been under construction for the past two years, will be opened officially on Saturday afternoon at 2.30 by the Minister of Works (Mr. Semple). Comprising 116 separate flats, the building has been constructed in modern style and is regarded by the Housing Construction Department as one of the outstanding examples of flat construction to date. The Berhampore flats were the Department's first big venture in this form of housing, but the Dixon Street flats surpass them both in style, architectural features, and also in regard to the number of single dwelling units they provide. In accordance with the usual practice the allocation of the flats is the job of the State Advances Corporation. The number of applicants is many times greater than the number of flats in the new block. The building rises 10 storeys high. Each flat comprises a living-room, bedroom with small balcony in front, a kitchen, and a bathroom, and covers an area of 548 square feet. They are not intended for families.
