Berlei, Ltd.,. Sydney, reports net profit of £27,337 for last year, compared with. £27,371 in the previous year. After adding £.6960 brought • forward and allowing for £2277 for staff profit-sharing dividend and £2234 for the staff provident: fund, £29,796 was available for appropriation. A sum of £5000 was transferred, to general reserve, leaving £24,796. Payment of dividends, of 8 per cent.'on preference shares and 10 per cent, on ordinary sharee, payable on September 1, less Interim dividends of 4 per cent, and 5 per cent, respectively (amounting to £8878), paid on March 2, absorbed £17,756, leaving £7040 to be carried forward. The directors report that the year's operations were beset with difficulties. Material and labour shortages, as well as increasing costs, reduced both sales and gross -profit, which were met by further economies and reduction of expense. The Government had undertaken to purchase materials of the industry under lease-lend with the U.S.A. to Increase, the supply of garments to trade and public, but It would'be some months before that relief could be effective.
