VEREENIGING DAY

CELEBRATIONS NEXT WEEK

Vereeniging Day, the Anzac Day of South African War veterans, will be celebrated next week on the anniversary of the signing of the peace treaty which ended the Boer War on May 31, 1902. In Wellington veterans will meet at their association's headquarters on Lambton Quay at 11 a.m. on Saturday for a parade. Colonel the Rev. D. C. Bales, V.D., the only remaining padre of the New Zealand Contingents, will give an address. "Reveille" will be sounded by the veteran Trumpet-Major F. C. Chcgwin.

"The Vereeniging Peace Conference has proved to the whole world that there is no rule equal to that of the British," one of the veterans said today. "We South African veterans wen. the first New Zealanders to volunteer for service overseas. It may be said that the South African War was of small moment compared with the present struggle, but the spirit of the volunteer in facing the unknown was just as praiseworthy and sincere in 1899 as it is today. In spite of the fact that 42 years have passed since the commencement of the South African War, South African War veterans are serving in the present conflict."

Mrs. A. P. Eanwell, 81 Queen's Drive, Lyall Bay, suffered concussion and head injuries when she slipped and fell on the pavement in Onepu Road yesterday afternoon. The Free Ambulance took her to hospital.
