NEWS OF THE DAY

Third-party Risks,

The next motor licensing year was recently increased to 13 months so that for 1942 and subsequent years the motor licensing year will terminate on June 30 instead of the end of May. An amendment to the Motor Vehicles Insurance (Third-party Risks) Regulations gazetted this week increases the premiums by one-twelfth, thus bringing the term of this insurance into line with the licensing year. Bequest to Sick and Wounded. The National Patriotic Fund Board has been advised that, subject to a life interest by a friend in the estate of the late Jane Ferguson, who died at Wellington, her will bequeaths £500 to the board to be applied and used for the purpose of the sick and wounded soldiers' fund. Mrs. J. P. Firth's Estate. "Since our last annual report a further £1000 had been received from Mrs. FirtlVs estate and has been paid to the credit of the Wellington College Perpetual Trust Fund in the Post Office Savings Bank." states the annual report of the Wellington College Old Boys' Association. "The income from this sum is to be spent exclusively on the War Memorial Hall at the college on such items as may be decided on by the headmaster and the president and secretary of the association." Patriotic Control. The desirability of adopting a unified system to prevent waste and overlapping in the collection of patriotic funds and distribution of comforts to the fighting forces has been recognised in other Empire countries besides New Zealand. Two examples are Australia and Souih Africa. A copy of a message by Mrs. J, C. Smuts, wife of the Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa, has arrived in Wellington, and in this she gives an outline of the work of the South African Gifts and Comforts Committee, of which she is chairman. This-committee. Mrs. Smuts states, makes sure that comforts reach their destination and also sees to it i that there is no overlapping on one j hand and no neglect or omission on the other—in other words, that all are happy and there are no sore hearts. The objective of the National Patriotic Fund Board of New Zealand is similar —the provision of extra amenities and comforts in such a way that all members.of the New Zealand fighting forces will share and share alike from the contributions made for their welfare by the general public.
