GENERAL FREYBERG
TRIBUTE BY MR. NASH
(P.A.)
AUCKLAND, May 23.
A tribute to Major-General Freyberg. Officer Commanding the Allied Forces in Crete, was paid by the Acting Prime Minister (Mr. Nash) in an address at the civic reception to Mr. Menzies.
The battle for Crete, Mr. Nash said, was one that called for the greatest courage on both sides. No one could deny that German air-borne troops must be daring and courageous men to face the test of dropping on to a strange country where a redoubtable foe was waiting for them. It was fortunate that the forces in the island had for their commander General Freyberg. a brilliant soldier with initiative, vision, and that highest form of courage that was linked with humility. No commanding officer was ever more concerned than General Freyberg about the life of the average soldier, his food, health, and general welfare. New Zealand and the Empire were lucky to have him.
