TRIBUTE TO JEWRY
ROLE IN STRUGGLE
MESSAGE BY GEN. SMUTS
MEN IN NEAR EAST
LONDON, May 23
In a message to the South African Zionist conference, General Smuts paid a tribute to Jewry for their contribution to the Allied cause, and said that in the years that would follow the war. the part they played by the side of their allies would be remembered.
In the Union of South Africa the percentage of Jewish volunteers was just as good as that of any other section of the population.
Messages were also sent by the Secretary of State for India, Mr. L. C. Amery. and Mr. A. Greenwood, Minister without Portfolio. Dr. C. Weizmann. president of the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland, declared that, though the situation was grave, British positions in the Near East, including Palestine, would be defended with determination and vigour and the invaders would be flung back. Half a million Jews in Palestine stood united and ready.
