A SINGLE PURPOSE

The message which Mr. Menzies has brought to New Zealand, and is taking to Australia, is one of profound admiration for the people of Britain and a stirring call for us to follow their shining and., glorious example. "In our own countries," he said last night, "we could do twice what we are doing and still stop short of the sacrifice being made by. the people of Britain." No one can seriously contend that, on this.side of the world, we have yet made oiir maximum effort, as "maximum" is understood by Britain. We are doing more and sacrificing more than a year ago, when the war was still something to be pursued with the least possible disturbance of everyday life. But we are still trying to carry on with all kinds of efforts and enterprises that whittle down the resources and energies for war purposes. Wohave not realised, except as a saying to apply to other people, what Mr. Menzies declared: "Not a scrap of individual comfort or standard of living mailers a hoot until we have won this war." The message he brings to us, and it is one we must heed, is that these other things must be left, that we cannot follow several aims, and try to win the war, retain our comfort, maintain our high living standard, and do it all under the best conditions. "We want," says Mr. Menzies, "a kind of single purpose league throughout the world. We must make up our minds that (here is one job in hand and one only."
