AMERICAN GROWTH
NAVAL AIR STRENGTH
MORE PLANES AND PILOTS
LONDON, May 21
Approximately half the total number of aircraft delivered to the United States navy last year was sent to Britain. This was revealed today by Colonel Frank Knox, Secretary of the U.S. Navy. He added that nearly 1000 new planes were delivered to the United States Navy in the first four months of this year. The exact figure was 996 planes, compared with a total of 79 planes in the corresponding period of last year.
Colonel Knox also gave the total number of planes in the United States Navy on May 1 as 3476, nearly 1400 more than it possessed on May 1 last year. The training of pilots was also proceeding very satisfactorily. Colonel Knox announced that the rate had been accelerated five-fold within the last year.
Admiral Towers, head of the United States Navy Air Service, said in Washington tonight that pilots for the fleet air arm of the United States would be trained at the rate of 600 a month in the near future instead of 200 a month as at present.
