ZAMZAM SUNK
NAZI ANNOUNCEMENT
CREW AND PASSENGERS SAFE
CONTRABAND ABOARD
(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, May 20. The German radio announced that the crew and passengers of the Egyptian steamer Zamzam, which was announced yesterday to be overdue on her voyage from Brazil to Cape Town, and to have at least 60 Americans on board, are safe "somewhere in occupied territory."
It was claimed that the Zamzam carried contraband and was sunk strictly in accordance with the blockade operations. It was added that the Zamzam carried lorries, cars, and machines for British troops and the de Gaulle forces.
Paris radio stated the Zamzam was sunk by a mine.
The U.S. State Department has cabled the United States Embassy in Berlin for full details on the sinking of the Zamzam.—U.P.A.
