Oriental merchandise of every description was brought by camel caravan from Bagdad, making it a seething, colour-splashed seaport, swarming with Chinese, Arabs, Egyptians, Turks, Hindus, and African negroes. Its busy waters were filled with all kinds of junks* painted in dazzling colours.
