TOBACCO TRADE
COMMERCIAL TRUSTS ACT
A reply was given in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr. Sullivan) to a notice of question that had been given by Mr. R. McKeen (Government, Wellington South), asking whether the Minister would take immediate steps, in the interests of the tobacco consumers of the Dominion, to have that branch of the international tobacco trust which was operating in New Zealand under the trade name of W. D. and H. O. Wills (N.Z.), Ltd. placed under the provisions of the Commercial Trusts Act.
The Minister said that tobacco was removed from the schedule of the Act in 1933 by the then Government in order to take care of certain unsatisfactory marketing conditions. It would be necessary to examine thoroughly the whole matter before making a decision on the issue raised in the question.
The Governor of French Equatorial Africa has issued a new series of 39 stamps to celebrate General de Gaulle's arrival in French Congo.
