MILK SUPPLY

HUTT VALLEY AND BAYS

CONTROL OF QUALITY

ZONING BEGINS

As from tomorrow, the distribution of milk in the Hutt Valley and Bays district will be carried out on a "zoned" system, designed primarily to economise petrol by abolishing over- j lapping runs. There has been some concern among consumers who have expressed fear that they will not like the change of milk which the new system may bring them. Inquiries made by "The Post" indicate that there is no ground for this fear, because as to the supply in gen-; eral there will be and can be no change. Except for a very small amount, said to be not more than 5 per cent., all the milk used in the district is blended at the central depot (in Petone) of the Dairy Farmers' Association. This milk is brought, in cans which are clearinerl at the depot from farms which are "certified" and is thus subject to the same safeguards, except pasteurising and bottling, as are used for the Wellington supply.

The distributors 'ake the milk from the depot in their own cans, which are subject to., supervision by the Health Department and the borough councils; and this supervision is reported to be very strict. A small proportion is distributed in bottles.

Apart from the main supply thus dealt with, a few of the suppliers sell milk from their own farms, and this is not passed through the Petone depot. This is the 5 per cent, already mentioned.
