PETAIN AND LAVAL
THE VICHY CABINET
TALKS WITH GERMANS
"EXTREMELY SATISFIED"
LONDON, November 1.
M. Laval. Vice-Premier and Foreign Minister in the Vichy Government, returned to Paris this afternoon-and reported to the Cabinet on his talks at Paris yesterday. No particulars of the talks were revealed, but a communique issued after today's Cabinet meeting said Ministers were extremely satisfied with the course of negotiations, and had expressed unanimous confidence in Marshal Petain and M. Laval. Government circles said after the meeting that the negotiations Were confined to economic problems and territorial questions were not dis-
cussed
Representatives of Vichy outside France continue to issue denials that there is any question- of giving up French territory or giving the Axis naval and air bases. The statement made by General Weygand has been followed by one from the French Legation in Cairo saying that all reports about preliminaries to a peace between Vichy and Germany are without foundation. Germany also seems anxious in case news of M. Laval s talks with Herr Hitler should provoke reactions within the -French Empire. The official German news agency is circulating a denial that Syria would be occupied by Germany or Italy.
