TRAMWAY COSTS

Sir,_ You had a sub-leader recently on tramway systems. I have noticed some queer things recently on our own tramway system. At Miramar terminus a loop has been laid, together with the overhead gear necessary, at a substantial cost. Trams come along all day and run around. It costs over a shilling a mile to run a tram, yet these additional miles are run, continuously, and do not bring in an additional farthing. Now the clock has been moved, and the trams stop in the loop and we wait at the terminus wondering where our tram is, and how the time is. Nobody seems to know why we have been put to this inconvenience or why this money has been sunk. Another queer happening was the deviation via Onepu Road. We were told it was to speed up Exhibition traffic. Two additional bends and an additional stop were put here to speed up traffic. When the tram fares were under discussion recently, the thought passed through my mind that, if money had not been spent unnecessarily and if the free list were entirely suspended there would have been no need to increase the fares.—l am, etc.,
