GLEN AFTON TRAGEDY

The final cases arising out of the Glen Afton Mine tragedy on September 24, 1939, when 11 men lost their lives, have been settled in the Supreme Court at Hamilton, states a Hamilton correspondent. Damages totalling £2250 were granted to Annie Peden and her two children, and a similar sum was granted to Jessie Cole, in their respective actions against Glen Afton Collieries, Limited. Mr. C. J. O'Regan represented the plaintiffs and Messrs. A. K. North and J. Hoare the defendant company. Two other claims on behalf of widows alone, Mrs. Dorothy "Wilcox and Mrs. Esther McKenzie Ireland, were not set down for hearing, as settlements were made in each case for £tlsoo. Mr. C. J.
