CLOUDY AND MILD

Special forecast for Wellington:—

Strong north-westerly winds gradually moderating.

Weather mainly cloudy and mild with the possibility of occasional light rain.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole is for moderate to strong winds' from a westerly quarter, with north-westerlies prevailing mainly, but with south-westerlies at times in the southern portion of the South Island. Over most of the North Island and in Canterbury and Marlborough the weather will be fair to cloudy. Elsewhere it will be unsettled with 'scattered rain, falls being heavy at times in the west and far south of the South Island. Temperatures will be mild, but will gradually fall in the south.

The meteorological situation has not changed, an anti-cyclone being centred in the north and westerly depressions continuing to pass in the south. Moderate to strong winds from a westerly quarter reached gale force in several places yesterday afternoon and last night, but in the far north and over most of the South Island winds by this morning had decreased in force. Yesterday's weather was cloudy generally, with rain in South Westland and Western Otago and with scattered showers on the south coast. Rain this morning was confined to the Westland Province and to the Alps, some heavy falls with flooding being recorded. Otira has had 423 points in the twenty-four hours, Arthur's Pass 273, Greymouth 226, and Jackson's Bay 215. Tempei'atures have been mild in the west and warm in the east.

The four main cities had cloudy to overcast weather yesterday, temperatures being mild in the north and warm in the south. Wellington's maximum and minimum readings were 58.6 and 53.9 degrees, respectively, but the maximum in Christchurch rose to 76.3 degrees and the minimum was 59.7 degrees. Wellington had a north-westerly gale last night, a gust of 61 miles an hour being the strongest recorded at Kelburn. In the other centres moderate north-westerlies to south-westerlies have continued!
