BEAU VITE'S CLOSE CALL

There were some interesting points attached to the narrow victory of the New Zealand champion Beau Vite in the Craven Plate on the third day of the recent A.J.C. Meeting, chief of which was the superb courage shown by the Beau Pere horse over the final stages. . ' With the pace slow m the early stages it was only natural that Beau Vite ■ should' be taken to the front to ensure a stronger rate of travel, but he not only increased the speed but made it a cracker. This naturally drew on his reserves and Mildura headed him inside the final furlong, with only fifty yards to go having a half-length advantage on the New Zealander, but Beau .Vite would not be denied and he got back to snatch victory right on the post. The sectional times for the mile and a quarter, Revealing the unusual nature of the pace, were as follows:—First furlong 13£ sec; two furlongs, 26sec; three, 33Jsec; four, 50Jsec; five, lmin 22sec; six, lmin 15sec; seven, lmin 27sec; mile, lmin 38Jsec; nine, lmin 50sec; mile and a quarter, 2min 2£sec.
