DAIRY PRODUCE

THURIDAY, OCTIBER 17, .940,

"NO TIME FOR PESSIMISM"

Fears are expressed in various sections of the dah-y export industry as to the iuture of the British marketer— after tha war. These fears are not shared by Mr. S. P. Taylor, chairman. oil ths Midland Dairy Company, Canterbury. Addressing shareholders of the company on their prosperous year— with a surplus of £12,220 against £9313 last year—Mr. Taylor said: "I cannot share the opinion so recently expressed, that we should b>ok pessimistically on the pritie to be < otainsd i cr dairy produce, or any other produce after "the war. ■

"Legislators the world over have learnt a lot since the last war and "Jits depressions, with ths result that, whereas butter-fat rose to 2s 66. per lb during the last war, there does not appear much chance of its rising over Is 5d in this war, and the same applies to other produce. In every country the tendency is to legislate against a boom.

"If this course is followed the ratioof fall in produce prices, whatever it may or may not be, must be less. Bat this is no time for pessimistic utter* ances. Let us do our utmost now, for if we fail it will not matter what the price of produce is after the war. 1*
