YACHTING

1941 N.Z.. CONTESTS

WELLINGTON DECISION TO

COMPETE

With one dissentient, the Wellington Yacht and Motor-boat Association last night decided to compete in the national yachting championships this season if there are sufficient entries from other provinces to make the contests worth-while. The subject wai raised in a letter from the Auckland Association, which sought Wellington's opinion on the advisability of holding the Sanders Cup contest in 1941.

Mr. B. J. L. Jukes, contending that the cups should not be raced for while the best yachtsmen were absent overseas, moved that Wellington should express the opinion that all national yachting championships should be held in abeyance for the duration of the war, but pointed out that that did not include the contests for the Cornwell Cup and the Tauranga Cup, for which the age limits were 19 and 15 respectively.

Mr. H. Stutter seconded the motion pro forma.

Mr. A. W. Johnson said that if finance could be arranged he saw no reason why the contests should not be held as usual, to maintain interest in the sport, and Mr. Stutter pointed out that the best men of all the provinces would be away so that all competitors would be affected practically to the same degree.

Mr. H. C. Dixon said that no matter what the sport or the job was, it was the duty of those who remained in New Zealand to see that everything was carried on as nearly as possible as usual. If that were not done with yachting, for example, a long war might mean the complete breakdown of the organisation of the sport in New Zealand.

The chairman (Mr. L. Robertson) said his feeling was that the contests should be carried on, provided the other provinces felt likewise, for he would not like to see the Sanders Cup won in a'two-boat contest.

Mr. A. Harvey agreed with Mr. Dixon's view. The younger men had to be encouraged, he said. Mr. Jukes: It will be a pretty hollow victory for anybody who does win it. Other members disagreed with Mr. Jukes, and an amendment moved by Mr. Dixon, expressing Wellington's determination to proceed if other provinces did, was passed as the motion, with only Mr. Jukes dissenting. It was decided to challenge for the Sanders, Idle Along, Cornwell, and tauranga Cups, subject to satisfactory contests being assured. SEASON'S RACING DATES. Dates for the sailing contests to be held in the coming season were fixed as follows:— Campbell Cup and Sanders Cup Trials, and Idle Along Cup Trials.— November 23, 24, and 30, and December 1.
