CHESS

The Wellington Chess League held lightning tourneys this season in place of the annual match played at Palmerston North of "City versus Rest of Province." The time limit was ten seconds per move. The results are:— A grade: N. Beyer, 1; J. D. Steele, 2. B grade: A. Gadd, 1; N. T. Fletcher, 2. C grade: Cottingham, 1; Kranz and Henderson, jun., 2. This is the third time sixteen-year-old Steele has been runner-up in a, lightning tourney. Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Goldsmith presented the prizes. The Wellington club championship is in its concluding stages and scores among the finalists are:—P. Allerhand, 3-3; R. G. Wade, 44-5; A. W. Gyles, 4-5: E. J. Dyer, 2-3; K. Beyer (holder), 3-6; F. K. Kelling, 3-7; W. J. Fairburn, l£-6; S. Bauer, U-6; and E. H. Severne. £-5. The president's tourney is making eood progress and leading scorers are J, K. S. Webling, 5-7, and E. J. Arlow, 4|-6. A new club has been formed at the Automatic Telephone Exchange and R. G. Wade, runner-up in the champion of champions recently, gave a simultaneous display, playing 21 games and winning all within two hours. Local entries for the New Zealand championship to be held at Timaru, commencing Boxing Day, are not expected to include Messrs. Gyles, Dyer, or Beyer. This should eliminate any difficulties of the Selection Board anticipated by amending the. maximum acceptances from fourteen to twelve.
