WELLINGTON SHAKESPEARE SOCIETY

The programme for the October meeting of the Wellington Shakespeare Society was provided by of Wellington College.

Pianoforte solos were played by R. Vance, J. H. Caradus, and A. M. Alcorn. A humorous recitation, entitled "Higeins on Shakespeare," was given by R. K. Read, and songs were sung by J. D. Craig, E. J. H. Barnard, and P. Y. Collins. An extract from "King Richard II" was ably read by K. B. Jordan and L. J. Lambourne, the former reciting with great feeling the famous paean on England, uttered by the great patriot, John of Gaunt. F. M. Todd and C. R. Climie were seen to great effect in their dramatic interpretation of the quarrel scene between Brutus and Cassius from the play "Julius Caesar," and B. Hurrell and R. Taylor, -taking the parts of Wolsey and York, enacted part of the scene from "Henry VIII," in which Wolsey bids farewell to his greatness. Other interesting items were given by K. L. Cox, who recited from "The Merchant of Venice" the speech of Shylock when Antonio came to him to borrow money to assist his friend Bassanio, and by K. H. Dudson, who multiplied his parts in a scene from "King John."

The College Dramatic Club presented two humorous extracts from Baring's "The Rehearsal" and Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest." Here the performers showed considerable dramatic ability and highly amused the audience. Those taking part in the former, which was intended to represent a rehearsal of "Macbeth," were F. M. Todd, A. M. Alcorn, E. J. Quinn, M. L. Clarke, N. J. Glasson. J. W. Learning, A. B. Glengarry, R. Wilkin, K. Jordan, C. R. Climie. B. Hurrell. In the latter play the characters were taken by A. M. Alcorn. E. J. Quinn, J. D. Pottinger, P. F. Allwright, R. M. Campion, F. M. Todd. Both plays were produced by A. M. Alcorn. At the close of the evening Mr. W. A. Armour, headmaster, received a vote of thanks on behalf of the pupils.
