The Speaker of the House of Representatives (the Hon. W. E. Barnard) yesterday formally notified the Clerk of Write of the vacancy in the House caused by the death of Mr. A. E. Jull, former member for Waipawa. This was Ihe first step in preliminaries that will lead to the filling of this seat.

The vacancy will be duly gazetted, and following; that the Glerk o* Writs will be. instructed by the Speaker to issue a writ to fill the vacancy. This writ will "■ be issued to the returning officer for the district,"; and -will; specify the latest date for the;^ nomination of candidates and the polling in:'.event of the- seat being. <Kjntested.;-;.,;ini the meantime, a supplementary r611,; which will-close at 6. pirn..on the day on which the writ is issued, is being compiled, and arrangements are being made to enable Waipawa electors serving overseas to vote. The name of the successful candidate has to be endorsed on the writ, which is returnable within 40 days. Under the provisions of the Electoral Act the latest day for the nomination of candidates shall be not less than ten days nor more than 17 days before the date of polling.
