PATRIOTIC FUNDS
MEETING AT LYALL BAY
A large and representative meeting of residents of Lyall Bay was held in the school last evening to form a committee to further the appeal for patriotic funds and to discuss district organisation. Mr. J. H. BurgoyneThomas presided
Particulars of the Wellington scheme to raise £100,000 for patriotic purposes were given by the chairman of the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Committee, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop. Appeals on a national scale were over, said Mr. Hislop, but it was intended to continue with local efforts. The appeal would start next week, and it was confidently hoped that by the end of November £50,000 would have been obtained. The fund would probably be closed in January, and he considered that it was better to have one large appeal at the one time instead of continually asking for support.
The local committee, it was pointed out, would work entirely on its own, though it could obtain advice from the Wellington committee.
Officers were elected as follows:— Chairman, Mr. Burgoyne-Thomas; deputy chairman, Mrs. Tilyard; secretary, Mr. W. W. Rountree; treasurer, Mr. Crawford; committee, Messrs. J. Noad, F. Evans, E. W. Boyd, P. F. Coira, and Chapman, and Mesdarnes Topp, Teward, and Neil and Miss Wood.
Donations for the fund were received from Mr. and Mrs. Ockenden, Mr. F. W. Boyd, Mr. and Mrs. F. Evans, Mesdames Roberts, Symes, Noad, and Anonymous, £1 each.
A further meeting of the committee will be held on Monday night.
