MEDITERRANEAN BATTLE
(Received October 15, noon.) LONDON, October 14. Rome radio, supplementing official details of a battle which an Italian communique reported had taken place in the Mediterranean, said: "A flotilla of j three Italian torpedo-boats in Sicily Channel discovered a British naval | squadron. The flotilla leader ordered full-steam ahead and attacked a British j cruiser with three torpedoes at a dis- j tance of about a quarter of a mile, and' also fired several shots. Our torpedo-J boats had to suffer under a heavy .j pounding from the cruiser. The flotilla leader was heavily struck and sank. A second torpedo-boat also sank after being struck by several shots. Fire. broke otit aboard one of our destroyers which came to the aid of the torpedo-boats. The destroyer proved unable to proceed and consequently was blown up by her own crew, who took to their boats. They saw the British cruiser sink."
