"WAR WEAPONS WEEK"
RIVALRY IN BRITAIN
RESPONSE TO NAZI RAIOS
(British Official Wireless.) ' | I (Received October 15, noon.) ! RUGBY, October 14. British cities are competing in friendly rivalry during the present week, which has been called a "war weapons week," to provide by voluntary effort the cost of material essen- j tial to the armed forces in carrying on | the war. Manchester aims at raising J £10,000,000 —the cost of a battleship— while, of the £8,000,000 aimed at by Birmingham, £4,500,000 was contributed before the campaign actually! opened. ' In performing the opening ceremony j in Birmingham Mrs. Churchill said that j 'the devastation and ruin which had been caused by enemy bombs had aroused nothing but anger in Britain at the ruthless methods which Nazi Germany was adopting. Underlying [Britain's sorrow and sympathy there was determination to fight, work, and live for victory, and those who suffered most were the ones who were most resolved. The determination to end the German aggression for all time had been strengthened by the raids on London.
