LOCAL COMPETITIONS

Championship cricket in all grades Will commence in Wellington on Saturday. This was decided at a meeting of the management committee of the Wellington Cricket Association last night after notification had* been received from the Director of, Parks and Re-, serves that sufficient wickets would be available. The senior matches set down for Saturday, with grounds to be. decided later, are as follows: —Midland v. Wellington College Old Boys; Karori V. Institute; Wellington v. Hutt; University v. Kilbirnie.

Mr. J. E. Lamason, of the Wellington College Old Boys Club, a Wellington and New Zealand representative, was elected sole selector for the ensuing year.

Because of the difficulties in the way at the moment it was decided, on the motion of the chairman (Mr, A. W. Duncan), that the proposed Wellington versus Trentham match at the Basin Reserve, on Labour Day, be not held. Endeavour will be made to hold the game later in the season.

An. announcement was made that bigger wickets would be used in all grades this summer instead of from senior to fourth grade, as last season.

Tfee Manawatu Association expressed -the: opinion that the minor associations' conference with the parent body should be lield this year in Falmerston North, and that the annual Town v. Country match -should be played. It was decided to await the opinions of the other, minor associations before proceeding! further with the matter.

An application for. affiliation from the Air Force at Rongotai was granted. So far it has a team in the third grade: competition. The Canterbury Association suggested the holding of the annual Brabin Shield match between Wellington and Canterbury colts at the Basin Reserve, on January 1 and 2. This was tentatively accepted. ~-.., The association s professional coach, J R Sheffield, was appointed to the University Club for the third year in succession. The Petone Club's application for senior status was not granted.
