WARSHIPS FROM AUSTRALIA

Announcing that 50 new war vessels would be built in Australia and commissioned for active service by the end of next year, the Prime Minister of Australia (Mr. Menzies) said recently that 20 w,ere being built for the British Admiralty, and the others for the Australian Navy.

Not only would the ships be built in Australian yards, but their design also was Australian. Australia's ability to begin at short notice an ambitious programme of building more than 50 patrol vessels was the result of careful plans made before the war..

The naval authorities, after an investigation, had decided on what classes of ships Australia could build rapidly and in large numbers in an emergency. The Naval Board designed a ship which would be within the capacity of Australian shipyards to produce quickly, and which would be of great value in the fight against mines, submarines, and aircraft. The design adopted was so well received by the British Admiralty that it placed a big order for vessels for the Royal Navy.

As soon as the naval shipbuilding programme eases the Commonwealth Government will give Australian shipbuilders big contracts for commercial vessels.

The committee will shortly commence regular sittings to dispose of appeals.
