TRENTHAM GALLOPS

MASTERTON CANDIDATES

(By "Rangatira.")

With T. R. George's big team still not back at Trentham, the centre will not be quite so strongly represented as usual at Masterton this week by its other establishments. However, sixteen horses at present working there are among the first day's acceptors, and another seven or eight are likely to come in on the final day, so that some Trentham successes are on the card.

. The weather was dull for the gallops this' morning, and the grass tracks were in their best order for some time. However, as many of the horses were racing at Otaki last Saturday there was not a deal of fast work.

On the two-year-old track Royce (T. Biggs) was going better than Lady Boswal (R. Barrott) at the end of three furlongs in 36£ sec. Royce has made a quicker recovery from his soreness than anticipated, and he will, be racing again at Trentham.

Foreign Coin (P. Burgess) was too speedy for Saka Bona (R. Bucknell) and Daljarrock (J. McCauley) over half a mile in 49sec, but the novice pair went very satisfactorily and they will improve with a race. Saka Bona, as well as Gunyah, Lady Boswal, and Miner's Hope are to contest the nursery event at Masterton on Thursday. Gunyah was given exercise work only this morning. He has an advantage on the other three juveniles going to Masterton, as he has had a race. His stable has won. the Opaki nursery event three times in the last four years with Brabant, Beaulivre, and Absolve respectively. On the trial grass, Kentucky (T. Biggs) ran five furlongs in Imin 3sec, the last half-mile in 50sec. Blue Border came home the last half-mile of six furlongs in 52sec. War Cloud (Burgess) finished up a round of pacing on the plough with three furlongs in 39sec. Lady Motava (Burgess) took 40 sec.

Equity (Bucknell) bounced away from Locrian (J. Garth) and Kilometre (Burgess) at the six-furlong post, and was five or six lengths clear at the half-mile, which she reached in 25sec, but she tired over the last furlong and a half and was beaten home a length by Locrian in lmin 16£ see. Equity retains her former track pace, but it remains to be seen if she has overcome her high state of nervousness in races. Kilometre was coming up on the bit to win this gallop comfortably, but about fifty yards from the post he suddenly knuckled over and Burgess was lucky to pull him back on to his legs. Afterwards he seemed to be showing no sign of soreness, so the happening was probably purely fortuitous.

The horses who raced at Otaki were mainly let off with light work. They included Enrich, Acrobat, Titter, and Red Dash, as well as Royal Vision, Takahe, Great Bramble, Miner's Hope, and Haughty Rival, all engaged on Thursday. Additional horses for the second day on Saturday include Good Sun, Blue Border, Siegmund, The Monarch or Maharajah, Absolve, and possibly one or two others. Riding engagements for Thursday include:—P. Burgess, War Cloud; R. Bucknell, Equity, Gemara, and probably Saka Bona; P. Atkins, Enrich, Gunyah- W. J. Broughton, Trench Law; S. Anderson, Olein; H. N. Wiggins, Dunloe; F. Power, Royal Vision; J. Forsyth, Locrian; R. Barrott, Lady Boswal; and T. Biggs, Acrobat, Titter.
