PRISONERS SENTENCED

Thomas Smith, a seaman, aged 38 (Mr. J. A. Scott), was admitted to probation for twelve months by Mr; Justice Ostler, in the Supreme Court today for forgery.. Counsel said ho one had lost by .the offence—the prisoner had bfeeri entitled to the money he gained and would have received it. He had come ashore because of ill health and had a job to go to until he went back to /sea. ; The prisoner was ordered to pay the costs, £1 is, and agreed to take put a prohibition order.

Roy Hpllie Johns, an iron worker, aged; 2i3'•(Mr; F. .W. Ongley), was ordered to-coirfe up for sentence "--if called upon within" twelve 'months for failing to stop after an accident." He was prohibited' from driving for two years and ordered to pay the costs, £1 5s 7d. : His Honour said he agreed with cbtirisel that the'prisoner was of good character, and although he committed an offence he retrieved the position by going to the police. Hugh Matheson, a.seaman and porter, aged 38, was sentenced to., twelve months' hardlabdur for breaking; and entering' air dtheft'. His'.Hqnpur said that notwithstanding ' the. fact" that breaking and entering was a serious charge,* he would have been quite content to give the prisoner a chance if he had had a clean record. He was at present serving a gentence for theft. Mr. W. R. Birks appeared for the Crown.
