The veteran trainer James Scobie died yesterday, aged 80 years. He was the doyen of Australian trainers and retired only recently..

The late Mr. Scobie prepared winners of almost every important race in Australia. He won the Melbourne Cup with Bitalli, King Ingoda, Clean Sweep, and Trivalve. Horses prepared by him won the Victoria Derby eight times, the A.J.C. Derby and the South Australian Derby each four times, th« V.R.C. Sires' Produce Stakes seven times, and the Maribyrnong Plate five times. His charges.also secured four Australian Cups, six Williamstown Cups, and five Adelaide Cups. Patrons of the stable won £250,000 in stakemoney. *
