ROWING SEASON OPENS

The Redding Shield regatta, which was towed under favourable conditions on Saturday afternoon, marked the opening of the new rowing season in Wellington. The shield was won by Petono, the holders, who scored 22 poirita, Star gaining 12 and Wellington S.

Speaking at the official opening ceremony, Mr. W. J. Gaudin, president of the New Zealand Amateur Rowihg Association, said that individual love of the sea, reflected in oarsmanship and seamanship fostered in tho thousands of rowing and yachting clubs throughout the Empire, had made possible the successful evacuation of the hard-pressed British forces at Dunkirk. "Rowing," said Mr. Gaudin, "trains not only the participants' minds and bodies, but also instils in them the art of watermanship, which has stood our nation in such good stead more than once. "We all thrilled at that miracle at Dunkirk, when thousands of small craft took part in that great evacuation whereby the flower of the British Army was brought fiafely home. "It w«9 through their knowledge of watermanship that the rescuers were enabled to play their part in that epic struggle of British history." Youths' Fours.—Star I, Wellington 2, Petone 3. Won by two and a half lengths, with a length botween second and third. Maiden Pairs.—Petone 1, Wellington 8, Star 3. Won by three feet, with four lengths between second and third. Open Fours.—Petone 1, Wellington 2. Won by a length. Youths' Pairs.—Star 1, Petone 2. Won by a length and a half.
