8.8.C. TRIBUTE
BUILDER OF THE R.A.F.
Paying a tribute to the work of Sir Cyril Newall, the Governor-General designate of New Zealand, the 8.8.C. today said that, when thn history of the R.A.F. was written and the full story of its development from its earliest days to its present commanding position was told, that would be the biography of Sir Cyril Newall. There were few aspects of its growth in which he had not had a hand. The measure of the man who was to take up the duties of Governor-General was to be found in the present brilliant successes of the R.A.F. In particular, he was responsible for the adoption of the eight-gun fighter principle From 1926, when he became Director of Operations and Intelligence and Deputy Chief of the Air Staff to his appointment a s Chief of the Air Staff, Sir Cyril saw the whole progress of R.A.F. expansion. The last three years have imposed a strain wellnigh intolerable to many men.
