ESPERANTO

Members of the Karori Esperanto Society on Wednesday rehearsed a play written by Miss F. Bennett, to be presented at the next meeting of the "Kultura Rondo" in Wellington. Mr. Nelson Hill presided over the meeting, and the classes were under the direction of Miss Bennett and Mr. E. G. Bernfeld, who reported excellent progress by the students. Mr. V. J. Leek, president, in welcoming members at the weekly meeting of the Wellington Esperanto Club, quoted what Dr. Zamenhof, the author of Esperanto, had said, that Esperantists desired to lay a neutral foundation on which the diverse races of mankind might peacefully fraternise without imposing on each other their racial differences. Classes continued until supper-time, and a spelling-bee between two teams, led by Mr. Leek and Mr. Jowers, resulted in a draw.

Mrs. Roslyn Cooper read an original Esperanto paper on "Vivo en Birmo" ("Life in Burma") at the weekly meeting of the Miramar Esperanto Society. The president, Mr. Bertram Potts, congratulated the speaker, a first-year student, on her command of Esperanto and her literary ability. Supper was served, and an instructive and pleasant evening concluded with general conversation in Esperanto.
