MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Three men, Keith Kennedy, a seaman, aged 26, Herbert John Keeling, labourer and salesman, aged 22, and Ralph Daniel Joseph King, a seaman, aged 25, appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday charged with obstructing Constable G. A. Ross in the execution of his duty. They pleaded not guilty, but each was convicted and fined £5. In addition King was fined £2 for using obscene language. The Magistrate said that no doubt there was obstruction but no serious violence had been used. Mr. C. H. Arndt represented the accused.
Frank Quilty, a seaman, aged 30, •was convicted and sentenced to three weeks' imprisonment with hard labour for absenting himself from an overseas liner. "It is very difficult, in these times of war, when we are trying to rush the ships round the coast, to have men like this to deal with," said an officer from the ship.
Raymond Alfred Mummery, a soldier, aged 20, was admitted to probation for 12 months for theft of a watch, the property of L. D. Shelswell.
