VISIT TO BERLIN
SOLDIERS DRESSED AS
TOURISTS
To be in Berlin a week before Germany invaded Poland, to see the erection of anti-aircraft guns, and car loads of soldiers in mufti setting off as "tourists" was the experience of Miss E. Overton, who gave an interesting account of her Continental visit to members of the Christchurch Business and Professional Women's Club at a tea meeting held in Beath's grey room on Friday evening, states the "Press."
Seated in a Berlin cafe, Miss Overton said she had turned round at the sound of an English voice. The owner of it, a young woman, responded to conversational overtures, and said she had just returned from 13 days' train journey across Siberia and had never felt so dirty in her life. Her home town was Auckland, New Zealand, and by a coincidence she was staying at the same hotel in Berlin as Miss Overton. As a member of a Cook's touring party, Miss Overton had visited several night clubs. One of them featured several novelties—coloured lights overhead, coloured fountains around the ballroom, and private telephones in each alcove, so that dancers could communicate with occupants of other alcoves. From Germany, Miss Overton went to Holland. At a service which she had attended in the old "kirk," collection boxes had been passed round four times. On one occasion the box had resembled an old bicycle lamp.
