IN BALLOT BY ERROR
VOLUNTEER TERRITORIALS
In the House of Representatives today, the Minister of National Service (the Hon. R. Semple) was asked by Mr. E. B. K. Gordon (National, Rangitikei) whether he was aware that volunteers already serving in the Territorial Force had been called up in the first ballot. He desired to know whether the Minister would take the necessary steps to ensure that those already serving as volunteer members in the Territorial Force were not included in future ballots.
"Although extreme care was exercised by both the Army and the National Service Department to ensure that a complete roll of all serving Territorials was compiled and their names removed from the ballot, it is regrettable that a few errors were unavoidable," said Mr. Semple. "In a work of this magnitude it is not unreasonable to expect a percentage of error, but, having regard to all the circumstance, I am satisfied that every care was exercised by my Department, and the same will be done in respect of all future ballots."
