GOLDEN DAWN MINE
Golden Dawn Gold Mines, Auckland, reports for the fortnight ending September 28:—Sinking of winze on No. 5 reef below No. 3 level continued, and now reached a depth of 80ft below level. Reef averages 40in wide, is more defined, and quartz harder, but values still remain low. Forty ounces of amalgam have been secured by berdan treatment from tailings since work recommenced.
A loss of £917, including £576 for depreciation, is reported by Golden Dawn Gold Mining, Limited, for 1939. In addition, £923 was expended on development. This compares with a loss of £2118 in the previous year. Notwithstanding the losses the directors report that the company had had to pay over £500 in gold duty. A recommendation had been made by the superintendent and mine manager that the winze below No. 3 level on No. 5 reef should be sunk a further 100 ft, since values had increased from 11s a ton at No. 3 level to 29s 6d a ton at 42ft down. The Government had granted a subsidy on the sinking of £2 for £1 up to £666 13s 4d on a footage basis, and sinking was under way.
