PACIFIC COAST

DEFENCE SPEEDED UP

JOINT BOARD'S DECISION

ATLANTIC FLEET

LONDON, October 3

"We have heard with great interest that the joint American-Canadian Defence Board has decided lo speed up plans for the defence of the Pacific Coast," said a London commentator today. "This was revealed today by Mr. F. H. la Guardia, head of the American section of the board."

The reason given was the signing of the new Pact between Germany, Italy, and Japan. Several proposals had been accepted and some were already under way.

As for the Atlantic, the board had decided to study the defence of New England and the maritime provinces of Canada as one whole.

The United States navy announces a newly-organised force of more than 125 ships in the Atlantic, in addition to the large Pacific fleet. New, recommissioned, and converted ships will be added to those already in the Atlantic.

The Secretary of the Navy, Colonel Knox, denied today that there had been any negotiations with Britain for American use of the Singapore Base.
