MINISTERS' TOURS

AIR-RAID PROBLEMS

LONDON, October 2

Several Cabinet Ministers have been touring London and other parts of the country to see how Britain is tackling the problems arising from the air raids. The Minister of Home Security, Sir John Anderson, and Admiral Sir Edward Evans, who is in charge of London's shelter arrangements, paid a sixhour visit to shelters in Lambeth, Shoreditch, and other London districts. They had a long talk with people sheltering there and with wardens. In some of the London boroughs there are community kitchens catering for people who have to take meals away from home or spend a night in the shelters. Lord Woolton, Minister of Food, visited one shelter today in Lambeth and saw a queue of about 50 waiting to be served with sixpenny lunches. He was very pleased with what he saw.

Admiral of the Fleet Lord Chatfield, who is actively concerned with the welfare of civilians as chairman of the committee which deals with awards for gallantry in civil defence, is touring various centres in England, Scotland, and Wales to see for himself the places where deeds of gallantry have been performed. He has been making certain that acts of notable gallantry are reported at once so that awards can be made as soon as possible.
