BOWLING

CENTRE

VETERANS'GALA DAY ECHO

The executive of the Wellington Bowling Centre met last evening, Mr. T. Lock presiding.

A one-day tournament was granted to Public Service superannuitahts on » the application of Mr. H.. R. Hounsell (Woburn).

In regard to a proposed visit from South' Auckland, the secretary, Mr. A. F. Spiller, said that the dates suggested. February 25 to March 2, were acceptable.

A suitable programme was arranged, the final details being-left to the entertainment committee.

The Manawatu centre suggested jTebruary 29 as the date of the annual visit. In view, of the South Auckland . visit, March 13 is to be suggested instead. Woburn Club sought the definition of a veteran. The' letter stated that at the recent Veterans' Gala ;Day tournament, two in the winning team were over 70, one had just turned 70, and one was 66.

The secretary said- that it was the custom where a club could not put in four representatives, to enter several. In this.case it was bad luck that the team, with one man under age, won. The man -under, age was really a substitute.

Mr. J. Norrie thought that, age was a matter which should appear on the entry forms. . v Mr. J. J. Casey (the president) considered that the time had come to raise the veterans' age from 70 to 75.

It was decided to inform Woburn of the ages of the team concerned, and the circumstances.

On the motion of Mr. H. F. Clark, seconded by Mr. T. Forsyth, it was decided to ask the New Zealand Bowling association if it was correct that the chief umpire, at its tournament had instructed the umpires not to enforce the rules in the tournament, and particularly the "one-foot-on-the-mat" rule.

The New Zealand Bowling Association advised that unofficial tours would not be allowed in future without its authority. . The Greenkeepers' Social Club was given permission to hold a tourney on March 5; on Khandallah green. For the champion of champions matches Victoria was fixed as the green for. the singles on February 21, Thorndon for the pairs on February 28, Kelburn for the junior singles on March 13, and Newtown for the fours on March 6 and 7. The question of fixing a time limit was raised/and it was decided that one and a half hours should be allowed for the singles, two and three-quarter hours for the mSs, and three hours for the fours, with the exception that there should be^o time limit for the final match.
