SPORTS EVENTS
EXHIBITION PERIOD
PUBLICITY SUGGESTED
During the Exhibition period a number of very fine sports attractions are scheduled to take place in Wellington, including riiany national championship gatherings, but, according to the view being expressed in some circles, steps should be taken.either by the Exhibition iauthorities or the sports bodies acting in concert to make these events more widely known in other parts of the Dominion.
. When the question of outdoor attractions during the Exhibition period was under consideration some months ago the Exhibition authorities showed lively interest in the matter; in fact, they gave a lead by calling a meeting in Wellington of representatives of sports bodies. It was evident at this meeting that various sports, organisa* tions. were anxious to co-operate and had either at that time already decided to hold their major attractions here or proposed doing so. Accordingly a sub-committee was appointed from this meeting for* the purpose of co-ordin-ating dates so as to avoid as far as possible fixtures clashing. This subcommittee got to work and eventually published a list of dates! These have since been amended,- largely -because of the outbreak of the war, . and in their - amended form were published in Monday's "Post." . However, they still make a formidable list, and a glance at the fixtures is sufficient to .realise that in ythe sporting line there are going to be some splendid attractions..- ....'■-
.The question now is whether something can be done to bring these fixtures; under the riotice of people iri other ■riehtres. There i are events- in the calendar which if they are known are, bound to be a strong attraction to people in,other parts of the Dominion, especially as. they can also see the Exhibition while they are in Wellington. This, it was pointed out today by the president of one sports bpdy, will be of benefit to 'lie Exhibition Company, for not only will these sports events provide some; variatipn from the great/show at Rongotai but they ./will also- bring to Wellington people who might hot otherwise make the visit. .- ■ :•
The view expressed by this sports official was that the sub-committee which had drawn up the list of fixtures, in conjunction with the Exhibit tion Company, could well do something 'to publicise the various sports attractions outside Wellington. In his view a circular should be drawn*,- up: and widely distributed. He felt itcould be done at little cost and that what little expenditure it involved
would be more than recouped later.
