CANADIAN CROPS

The Canadian wheat crop for 1939 is now estimated at 478.965.000 bushels. The final estimatee for 1938 was 350,000,000 bushels, and the average for the five years from 1932 to 1937 was 300,390,000 bushels. The oats crop in 1939 reached 385,930,000 bushels, compared with 371,382;000 in 1938. The barley crop is estimated at 103,266.000 bushels, which is-a slight increase on 1938. The rye crop totalled 15,307.000 bushels, against 10.988.000 in 1938.
A correspondent, "Old Timer," commenting upon an address delivered by Mr. W Toomath,'secretary of the Early Settlers' Association, last week, says that the first paper published in Wellington was one produced by Mr Samuel Revans. in 1840. on Petone beach. It was printed on brown paper Mr. Toomath was reported to have said that the first paper was printed oi. Petone beach by Mr. T. W. McKenzie.
