SUMMER FLOWERS
EAST HARBOUR SHOW
The Summer Show of the East Harbour Horticultural Society was held on Saturday in the Muritai Infant School, which proved again too small for the large number of entries received. The show was opened by Mr. J. S. Barton, president of the Hutt Horticultural Society, who congratulated the society on us success and its rapid growth, and on the display which it has staged. In the course of his remarks he stated that gardens and gardening should be looked upon as a means of escape from the nervous tension of troublous times.
Two beautiful exhibition tables were staged -by Day's Bay and Lowry Bay, under the supervision of Mrs. J. A. Biss and Mrs. C. Dentice respectively. Despite the recent trying weather there were large numbers of entries and the auality of the blooms was amazingly good.
Mr. W. E. Askwith, of Lower Hutt, won the Mrs. Knox Gilmer Challenge Rose Bowl and also produced the champion bloom (Mrs. Henry Morse), which takes the president's special prize. Miss R.. Isaacs again v°*n • Mr. F. Mason's prize of twelve rose-bushes for the exhibit of the six best decorative roses, and Miss A. Magill gained second prize.
There was a specially fine display in the Iceland poppy section.

Boys in the crafts class at an elementary school in Doncaster have constructed an electric clock which keeps accurate time and runs three months on a sixpenny battery. i
