FOURSOMES RESULTS

GUY AND WEIR SUCCESSFUL

YOUNG AMATEURS WIN

(By "Chipshot.")

- A. E. Guy and J. Weir, .professional partners in the 36-hole foursomes competition in the1 national golf tournament at Miramar,- yesterday outclassed the other pairs of "their section with a total of 139. Their rounds of 70 and

69 were beautifully, played and they teamed as though they had been playing foursomes all their lives instead of about once a year. Two of the most promising youngsters in the amateur field, B. H. Glading and P. G; F. Smith, won the amateur sectiprf with a total of 147, consisting of rounds of 74 and 73. W. B. Reilly and I. A. Ewen, of the Hutt Club, tried to equal, their score, but the fact that they needed a 2 on the 380-yard: eighteenth defeated them.

A. J. Shaw and Murray had a fine chance of defeating Guy and Weir, for they went round in.the'morning in 70 ancT the conditions for the afternoon rtfund were very'fine. . But the best the teani could do was a 76, :sufficient to give them second plape, but well^ behind the winners. , Shaw, who had" come on to his putting in the" morning, went off it again in the afternoon, andj this fact .made all the difference toj their chances. , .-..■.; ...'••-• P. Quinn and R. G. Holland's morning round of 74 equalled the score of Glading and Smith. But in the afternoon Holland put the first drive of the round into the fairway bunker on the right and the error set the pace for the rest of the round. The feature of' Guy and Weir's afternoon r#und was a great 2 at the second hole> Weir hit a booming drive to the green and. Guy' sank . .a •. 25-foot putt. They missed a par 3 at the seventeenth, coming home, but did not take a 5 at any hole. . . I . A long putt made a difference to .Glading and Smith. Glading's tee shot to the sixteenth in the afternoon was just off the cut green. Smith used ■his putter and sank the shot. The distince was about twenty yards. J. P. Hornabrook and B. M. Silk, holders, of the title, finished eight strokes behind the winners. Hornabrook was the stronger man in the morning, but in the afternoon both made errors. They continue, to play together each . year, but they have never teamed particularly well arid they, have only won the title once. .; ( The results were as, follows:— ' : Professional Championship.
