MORRIS HEDSTROM, LTD.
In a half-yearly report, the directors of Morris Hedstrom. Ltd.. Fiji, state that should conditions remain unchanged, the estimated profits for the half-year should justify the declaration of an interim dividend at the rate of 6 per cent, per annum, payable on December 31. The profits for the year ending March 31, 1940, should not be less than those earned during the 1938-39 period. The report relates that on September 30, 1939, the British Government fixed the buying price of South Seas F.M.S. copra at £12 a ton, against the market price of £9 7s 6d a ton at the outbreak of war. On October- 13 the Government reduced the price by 7s 6d a ton. "Present indications," it adds, "are that a substantial proportion of the increased price will be eaten up by increased rates of freight, but at present planters are receiving about £1 10s a ton more than they were paid at the end of August."
