MR. W. S. THOMPSON

Mr. William Stephen Thompson, an old and well-known resident of the Tawa Flat district, died at his home at Porirua last week.

Born at Tawa- Flat in 1858, Mr. Thompson was the youngest of the eight children of Mr. and Mrs. William Thompson, who had arrived at Wellington in the Gertrude on November 3, 1841, His parents died whilst he was still in his 'teens, and he was at work in Chew and Wagg's sawmill at Porirua at the age of 16, having for two years previously driven the timber wagons through the then dense bush to Wellington. Bush-fell-ing in the Manawatu engaged his attention for a while and then he took up farming. Marrying a daughter of Mr Jack Morgan, of Tawa Flat, whose parents had been early settlers, having arrived by the Birman in 1842, Mr. Thompson worked at Eketahuna and afterwards farmed at Otaki for ten years. Returning to Tawa Flat in 1895, Mr and Mrs. Thompson farmed various sections there until they retired a few years ago.
